BIO OF SHERIFF JAMES McGETTIGAN
Jim McGettigan, as a career law enforcement officer, served in a variety of position with the Atlantic City Police Department beginning in 1978 until his election to Sheriff in 1994.
He is a graduate of the FBI National Academy of Quantico, VA and a Graduate of the National Sheriffs Academy.
He is a member of the National and State Sheriff's Association of which he is President, the Atlantic County and National Chiefs of Police Association, the Criminal Justice Advisory Board, the Board of Directors for the County Food Bank, the American Legion, the Diocese of Camden Sexual Abuse Panel, the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick, the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Officers - (N.O.B.L.E.), the Moose and Elks Lodges, and numerous other professional, fraternal and civic organizations.
As Sheriff, he established the Sheriff's Anti-Violence Education (S.A.V.E.) Program to assist educators in recognizing at-risk youth, created a Homeland Security Training Program for Security Personnel, modernized the agency and formed partnerships with the FBI and U.S. Marshall Service to track down and arrest violent fugitives, and created a Community Affairs Unit to interact with seniors and the needy. He will be implementing the Project Lifesaver Program, which assists in locating at-risk members of the senior community. He is the Police Coordinator for Atlantic County Emergency Management.
As a lifelong Atlantic County resident, Jim has been active as a lead organizer of charitable endeavors over the years, which have raised thousands of dollars to benefit Juvenile Diabetes and Kidney research, the Boys Scouts of America and the scholastic efforts of the Patrolmen's Benefit Association.
Jim comes from a large family with deep community roots. He makes his home in Somers Point with this wife Pat and their two children, Jimmy & Teri.
